Keeping Austin Nice and Social

One of the things I love most about working at Mass Relevance is our core value of #freesponsibility. It sounds like a silly word, but #freesponsibility means having the freedom to take on new responsibilities. We’re not limited to the confines of our roles at Mass Relevance; we’re encouraged to seek new opportunities that align to our passions, hobbies and skills. I liken this to the concept of bringing your “whole self” to work - whether that means hosting a flavor profiles class with world-renowned Chef Bell because you’re a foodie, organizing games nights in the office because you’re a stud at Catch Phrase, or starting a knitting club after work because you love to make homemade presents during the holidays.

Part of my "whole self" is my passion for serving the Austin community through our incredible network of nonprofits. When I joined Mass Relevance in March, I noticed that many of my coworkers shared this passion, including our head of Health & Wellness, Emilee Feldhausen. Mass Relevance employees were already serving the community through grassroots efforts, but there was no internal support system to amplify their efforts. In the spirit of Tribes, Emilee & I partnered to create an internal program that would make it easier for employees to identify opportunities to get involved in the community, so we could use our skills to have a larger impact on the great city of Austin, Texas.

In August we created #beniceandsocial, a program to support employee-led activities that provide sustaining skills, resources, and guidance to help Austinites realize their full potential. We love our city, and we want to see it prosper. Through #beniceandsocial we want to use our people, technology, and resources to contribute to the long-term development of underserved populations.

In the past two months, #beniceandsocial has supported a number of local organizations - and we’re just getting started. In September the Marketing team visited Ronald McDonald House of Austin, where we prepared lunch for guests of the house. Ronald McDonald house offers Austin families a place to sleep, eat and relax while their children receive medical treatment at Dell Children’s Hospital. We were honored to tap Emilee’s culinary skills to prepare a 4-course meal for the families, which consisted of tofu and chicken spring rolls, Asian chopped salad, Hoisin chicken wings, and grilled peaches with goat cheese, mint and honey.

Our Design team also went offsite for a #beniceandsocial day, during which they supported Goodwill of Central Texas by disassembling donated computers to be resold or recycled. The Design team had a blast taking computers apart - I bet a few of them even worked out some pent up anger against previous computers that had crashed in the middle of an important project!

The #beniceandsocial team was thrilled to support Goodwill because they help Austinites find jobs, creating a lifelong connection to work that can truly change a life.

In addition to team offsites, we look for ways to use our technology to support organizations that are improving the Austin community. Last week we sponsored the Explore Austin Fall Backyard Ball. Explore Austin combines the benefits of mentoring and outdoor adventure in a six-year program for underserved youth. As a result of the program, “Explorers” increase self-confidence, build character, and develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and those around them. Several of our employees are Explore Austin mentors and have had great experiences with the organization.

We provided a Dynamic Mosaic that displayed all of the social conversations around the event in the venue. Attendees were encouraged to post about the party on their social networks so they could see their comments on the display. This created free earned media for Explore Austin, increasing brand awareness with each attendee’s social network.
