Mass Relevance 5% Time
What is Fantastic Friday
On the first Friday of the month you won’t find us hacking away at the office. Nope, we’re too busy playing volleyball, mixing cocktails, or going on a brew tour. But it’s more than just a fun day. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax and get to know your coworkers on a deeper, more meaningful level. Katie Daly, a designer for Mass Relevance says, “My favorite memories from work all start with Fantastic Fridays.” While Michael Pazienza, The Director of Engineering and Projects, says that he enjoys them because, “It helps me get to know the person on the other side of the email so I work harder and better to get them the information they need.” In a fast growing office, it can be hard to maintain close connections with your coworkers. Rather than becoming complacent about getting to know all of the new faces surrounding you, these events help maintain lasting bonds that translate into #agilispeed and #teamswork in the workplace.
This most recent Fantastic Friday, we all headed out to the newly opened Freedmen’s bar. While there, we enjoyed a lunch of grilled vegetables, roast chicken, melt-in-your-mouth brisket and a tasty grilled cabbage coleslaw. We also made sure to sample the fancy cocktails that Freedmen’s had to offer. After lunch, the wonderful Mixologist Myria led us through the science behind all of our favorite cocktails. We learned everything from how they are named to the herb that makes bitters.
Armed with our new knowledge we broke up into teams to develop new cocktails, utilizing a secret ingredient ranging from maple syrup to hot sesame oil. Myria helped each team with their cocktails. She even helped one team with a flaming orange peel garnish. Other teams explored what the surrounding restaurants had to offer, one incorporated a single bubble tea boba ball in their drink.
Beyond coming up with an original drink recipe, the teams also prepared logos to fit the theme of their drinks, as well as some live-action presentation to sell their drink. Creativity and deliciousness of the drink were judged in this high stakes competition. Many teams incorporated soundtracks into their skits. The winning team came up with choreography to a parodied version of Sesame Street’s theme song.
This event would not have been possible without the hardworking team at Freedmen’s bar. They worked tirelessly before and after the event to make it one of the most unforgettable Fantastic Fridays yet.
